snares, also known as top, franklin, and xray at various points in the past, was originally not given a name. Previously, when this server was called franklin, it was the mail server for the lab and was named after Benjamin Frankin, the first U.S. Postmaster General. However, mail was moved to a virtual machine of the same name. Consequently, when this server was re-purposed as a Sun Ray server for the APCS lab, it was renamed xray.

Finally the server acquired the name snares, after the Snares Penguin, and served as a part of the VM cluster running first Xen and then KVM.

The machine was later repurposed to be one of the two services providing storage services, along with Bottom. Crate and Barrel have now replaced this system, and it is now unused.
