Around 2005-2006, TJ was connected to the Internet2 backbone through Network Virginia. One of the reasons (but probably not primary) was that Network Virginia routed IPv6 traffic, which TJ has had the ability to do for several years now.
TJ currently has three internet connections: I-Net, UUNET, and Network Virginia. The I-Net connection is a 150Mbps uplink to FCPS run by Cox, which accepts port 80 traffic. The UUNET connection is a T1, and is for backup purposes. The Network Virginia link is a DS3 which routes on the Internet2 educational backbone.
The internal TJ network relies on a central Cisco 6509 switch with fiber links to 5 network hubs. The 6509 is currently scheduled to be upgraded to include a 10GigE module, so the satellite hubs will have 10GigE uplinks to the core switch. The Syslab, one of the satellite hubs, has four fiber links to the main switch, of which three are being used: CSL IPv4 traffic, IPv6 traffic, and Sun Ray traffic. Each of these is a 1GigE uplink from the CSL's Cisco 4506 (purchased around 2007-2008, installed spring of 2008; a fire alarm went of during the installation of the new switch).
TJ has primarily been a Cisco school for many years now. The Syslab's main router is a Cisco 4506 with a few SOHO switches for additional machines.
As a backup router, the Syslab has utilized a Cisco 1751 which resides under the floor, a few tiles away from the switch. This 10Mb/s switch was last used when the Cisco 4506 switch was being installed, and a temporary router was needed so all Syslab services weren't offline.
The Syslab's wiring was re-done over the summer of 2008 and Cat6 cabling was installed. Prior to this (not sure as to the date) the Syslab was decked out in Cat5e wiring. Both of these installations were done by students.
