Setting up a machine to be salted

In order to “salt” a machine, we must first install Salt:

machine ~ # emerge salt

You should also add the “salt-minion” service to the default runlevel:

machine ~ # rc-update add salt-minion default
machine ~ # rc-service start salt-minion

After this, the machine should automatically contact the Salt server and get encryption working. This is all done automatically. If you have trouble, try setting the “id” parameter in /etc/salt/minion:

id: machine.csl.tjhsst.edu

Restart the salt-minion service (rc-service salt-minion restart) and you should be good to go. Continue with setting up salt states for the machine.
