Iris (pre-1996 - ??) was a Silicon Graphics IRIS 4D/60 with 12M Bytes RAM, R2100 processor[1], 1.1G Bytes disk space, and a 19" color display. It ran IRIX 4.0.1 with many GNU packages installed.

This system, while X11 is rather slow, was used for it's high resolution 19" Color display and GL graphics programming in Supercomputer Applications.

Iris also served as the USENET news server for the lab, getting its feed from our connection to UUnet. [2]
