Overview

Emperor is a Penguin Computing Relion Server, which is currently being prepared to act as a backup server of sorts. Emperor hosts replicated read-only copies of numerous volumes in AFS as backups, and it is also being set up to backup data to the Exabyte EXB-480 Tape Drive via AMANDA and the OpenAFS backup system. In addition, emperor is the iodine development server (iodine-dev.tjhsst.edu), particularly for the understudies and other people interested in working with iodine.

Technical Specifications

Server Type Hardware type::
CPU Intel Xeon 2.66GHz
RAM 2 GiB
Hard Disks 6 x 200GB software RAID-5 (effective space ~1 TB)
OS Debian GNU/Linux Testing
Purchase Date

Issues

  • It seems as if Port #2 is faulty on the 3ware card. It keeps failing randomly in hardware and software RAID configurations.
  • AMANDA version 2.5.0-2 produces numbers 'Invalid Argument' errors when trying to read tape data in various situations (this occurs even when the drive is set to variable block size). So, version 2.4.x (2.4.4p3-3 as of the time of this writing) should be installed, as it reads the tapes correctly.

Notes

  • Restarting emperor with the Exabyte EXB-480 Tape Drive attached and turned on screws everything up. If you must restart emperor, turn off the Exabyte, then reboot emperor, then turn the Exabyte back on and reload the sym53c8xx module to detect the carousel and tape drives. Thus, do NOT reboot emperor without physical access! (Unless the Exabyte is already off.)
